The Tale of the Shepherd Boy
At the center of the enchanting rolling fields, lived a shepherd boy. His existence was mostly unadulterated, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was essentially to tend to his flock of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the wind through the solo tree on the peak were his main companions. Day upon day, guarding his responsibilities instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for company. In one such instance from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous plot.
Stories of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the town. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers ran up the hills to help but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy laughed at the dilemma on their faces. This game persisted for a few days more. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for aid screaming read more “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the consequences of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the value of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
